Badminton

January – December on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 7 am and 7:30 – 9:30 pm in the McAfee gym on EIU campus for ages 12 and older. Join Kevin Hussey for an opportunity to play badminton with family and friends. Multiple courts are available. FREE! No registration is required. Dates and times subject to change. AMC Summer Movie Camp

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly activity to take the kids to this summer, AMC Theatres is offering a $4 movie deal to keep them occupied while school is out. Card Games at the LifeSpan Center

C.A.R.E. Club

3rd Thursday of every month, 4-6pm at Douglas-Hart Nature Center. Ages 12-17 – Free! Douglas-Hart Nature Center is looking for members for our new Caring for Animals with Respect and Education (C.A.R.E.) Club! C.A.R.E. Club members will learn basic care and handling skills for turtles, salamanders, rabbits, and more! Members who meet volunteer goals will earn a free t-shirt and become Certified Animal Handlers at DHNC.

18th Street Farmer’s Market

Every Saturday through September 29th from 8am-Noon at the Coles County Health Department parking lot in Charleston. Vendors offer fresh produce, flowers and plants, handcrafted items, baked goods and more.

Fit-2-Serve Community Garden

Every Saturday from 9-11am at 520 South 5th Place in Mattoon. Come volunteer some time out in the sun, learn to plant and watch it grow!

AMC Sensory Friendly Films

2nd and 4th Saturday each month at AMC Theatre. AMC is proud to partner with the Autism Society to offer unique movie showings where we turn the lights up, and turn the sound down, so you can get up, dance, walk, shout or sing! Walk to Wellness

May 1st – August 31st. Would you like to win two tickets to see a Major League Baseball Team? Well, start walking! This Spring, sign up for Walk to Wellness. You could win two tickets for a September game! Your mission is to walk or run a total of 266 miles between May 1st and August 31st. Why 266 miles? It’s the straight-line distance between Busch Stadium and Wrigley Field! Progress reports, required at the end of the month, via email (recsup@co.coles.il.us) or by hard copy, may be mailed to our office (520 Jackson Ave.) or dropped in any water bill drop box (addressed to the Parks & Rec. Dept.) Those who reach the monthly goal will have a chance to win some great prizes! If you miss a month, don’t worry, just catch up! On August 31st, those who complete the entire distance of 266 miles will be entered into a raffle to win two tickets to see an MLB Team! Walk to Wellness is done on the honor system – don’t be the few who ruin it for the many! Contact the Charleston Park and Recreation office for more information or to obtain a progress report. Mattoon Food on the Move

May 29th – August 9th on Mondays – Fridays in Mattoon. We will not serve on July 4th or 5th. Children must eat their lunch with us and cannot take any food home. A Salvation Army vehicle will stop at the following locations:

East Rudy Place 1:40 pm

We please ask that all children 5 and under come with a parent/guardian. The truck will be at each location for 20 minutes only. In case of thunderstorms, lightening, or torrential rain, the Salvation Army reserves the right not to serve that day. Cancellations will be posted on the Salvation Army Facebook page by 10:30am. Rad Kids

Every Monday from June 17th-August 5th from 2-3:30pm at the Broadway Christian Church in Mattoon for ages 5-12. Kankakee Sands

August 22nd from 10-11:30am at Brookstone Estates in Charleston. Less than .1% of Indiana’s and Illinois’ original prairies and wetlands remain today. We’ll learn about conservation efforts at The Nature Conservancy’s Kankakee Sands which has preserved or restored over 7,300 acres of natural area and connects 22,000 acres of habitat in Northwest Indiana. Kankakee Sands is home to over 100 rare, threatened or endangered species and supports the endangered Regal Fritillary butterfly, red-headed woodpeckers, plains pocket gophers, short-eared owls, ornate box turtles, glass lizards and over 700 native plant species, filling the land with song and sights to behold. In 2016, 23 Bison were brought to the site as part of the restoration process. The herd has grown to over 50, and amazing changes are taking place on the prairie. Goat Yoga

Owl Be Seeing You

September 6th from 1-3pm at the Douglas-Hart Nature Center. Owls are sometimes referred to as wise old owls or birds of mystery and folklore, but what’s the real story behind these birds of prey?  In this fall themed class, participants will learn about owls of Illinois through hands-on material followed by a nature inspired owl craft using natural and up-cycled materials.
